Maia was the eldest and most beautiful of the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione. These daughters were mountain nymphs with violet coloured hair. They were called the Pleiades. When the sisters were being pursued by Orion, Zeus took pity on the women, turned them into doves, and moved them to the heavens out of Orion's reach, which is now why there is a constallation of seven stars with this name. It can be found in Taurus' tail. These nymphs are sometimes referred to as lesser goddesses who were linked with Artemis. Maia was associated with rebirth and children. She was the mother of Hermes with Zeus and, in Roman mythology, she was associated with the goddess of spring. The month of May is named for her.
